Texas Hail Season: How to Protect Your Car

Spring in Texas means hail season. Here's how to protect your vehicle, what to do when a storm hits, and how to navigate the repair process if damage occurs.

When Is Hail Season in Texas?

Texas hail season typically runs from March through June, with peak activity in April and May. However, significant hailstorms can occur at any time of year in Texas. The DFW Metroplex sits in a region meteorologists call "Hail Alley," where warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico collides with cold fronts from the north to produce severe thunderstorms capable of generating large hail.

How to Protect Your Vehicle Before a Storm

The most effective protection is covered parking. If you have a garage, use it during hail season — especially when severe weather is forecast. If you don't have a garage, consider a hail protection car cover. These padded covers can significantly reduce damage from smaller hailstones, though they are not foolproof against large hail.

Monitor weather forecasts during hail season. The National Weather Service issues hail watches and warnings for the DFW area. When a severe thunderstorm watch is issued, take proactive steps to protect your vehicle before the storm arrives.

What to Do When Hail Damages Your Vehicle

After a hailstorm, inspect your vehicle in good lighting — ideally in direct sunlight or under bright artificial light. Hail damage can be subtle, especially on darker-colored vehicles. Document all damage with clear photographs before touching or moving the vehicle.

Contact your insurance company promptly to report the damage. Comprehensive coverage (not collision coverage) covers hail damage. Your insurer will assign an adjuster to evaluate the damage and approve a repair estimate.

Choosing a Hail Damage Repair Shop

After a major hailstorm, you may be approached by traveling repair shops that set up temporary operations in affected areas. Exercise caution with these "storm chasers" — they often disappear after collecting payment, leaving you with no recourse if the repairs are inadequate. Choose an established local shop with a permanent address, certified technicians, and a written warranty.
